Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free Sports & Recreation

 

Non-profit local sport and recreation leagues, teams, and organizations wishing to support tobacco-free sport and recreation activities are invited to apply for funding.

This grant program is provided by the Central West Tobacco Control Area Network (CW TCAN), which is comprised of seven public health units and the Canadian Cancer Society – Smokers’ Helpline. These grants support the development and promotion of tobacco-free policies (also known as Codes of Conduct) by sport and recreation organizations.

Specifics and Requirements

To be eligible for this funding, your sport and recreation organization must be:

§ Non-profit

§ Offer sport and/or recreation opportunities for children and/or youth

§ Not accept funding, sponsorship or donations from the tobacco industry

§ Be located in the Niagara region

Award determination

Grants will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis; provided the application is completed in full, meets the eligibility criteria, and supporting documentation (if requested) is submitted.

Term and Conditions of Successful Applications

If the application is successful, your organization is agreeing to:

  • Implement a Tobacco-Free Policy by December 9th, 2011
  • Post the Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free logo on your website by December 9th, 2011
  • Include the Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free logo on all grant-purchased materials
  • Post your Tobacco-Free Policy on the Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free website
  • Complete a final report no later than January 13th, 2012 including copies of receipts (note: a short report template will be provided to successful applicants)

Funding:

Three grants of up to $500 will be awarded to sport and recreation organizations from the Niagara region that submit a plan to develop, implement and promote a Tobacco-Free Policy or to promote an existing Tobacco-Free Policy.

This funding is provided to support a variety of educational and promotional activities and resources that will help increase the awareness and adoption of your organization’s tobacco free policy.

Deadlines:

Last date to submit application: Sept. 30, 2011

Date successful applicants will be notified: Oct. 5, 2011

Last date to implement the policy: Dec. 9, 2011

Last date to submit final report: Jan. 13, 2012

Sport Commission In the Community




On March 2nd and 3rd the Niagara Sport Commission hosted a Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop at Eastdale Secondary in Welland. The workshop helped to certify 10 high school students as community coaches. The NSC would like to thank the Coach's Association of Ontario for helping to arrange this workshop. The students are a part of an NSC Community Engagement Project tying physical activity and leadership to the development of a healthy Niagara.
