SoGo Active

SoGo Active is a program launched by ParticipACTION and funded by Coca-Cola Canada ($5 million in Canada over the next five years). Unilike any other initiative, Sogo Active's unique "for youth by youth" approach gives young Canadians the tools to design, change and control their own get active plan.

SoGo Active capitalizes on the ability of young people to encourage their peers to engage in healthy living. SoGo Active also helps break down the economic barriers faced by youth trying to participate in sport by providing access opportunities in the community (hosts) and micro grants.

The youth participants register online at www.sogoactive.com. Once registered in the program, youth can create a profile for themselves, as well as find a wide range of physical activities, both traditional and non-traditional, to participate in. Youth participants set and track their active living goals online, as well as network with peers and arrange group activities.

The funds are used to offset the cost of sport participation for youth. The funding goes to the operating costs (facility, coaching, travel, nutrition), which would hopefully, reduce the registration cost for each participant.

How to Apply:

  1. Members of the sport team/dance team, etc. (ages 13 to 19) go on-line to register
    (name, birth date, e-mail address; parent's information is requested as a safety measure);
  2. Their coach goes on-line and registers as the "Community Host"
  3. One athlete/team member completes the Application Form.

**Each team can apply for funding more than once (e.g., $500.00 for coaching; $500.00 for facility rental; $500.00 for travel, etc.).

Megan Sutherland is the Provincial Coordinator of the program for Ontario. She has offered to help the youth complete their applications for funding.

Sport Commission In the Community

On March 2nd and 3rd the Niagara Sport Commission hosted a Fundamental Movement Skills Workshop at Eastdale Secondary in Welland. The workshop helped to certify 10 high school students as community coaches. The NSC would like to thank the Coach's Association of Ontario for helping to arrange this workshop. The students are a part of an NSC Community Engagement Project tying physical activity and leadership to the development of a healthy Niagara.
